Ethan Winter (W&M ’14), a double major in chemistry and biology, engaged in research both as a biology honors student in the Shakes lab and chemistry research student in the Scheerer lab. Ethan was actively pursuing a Ph.D. in Chemical Biology at Harvard University while studying novel biosynthetic pathways in microbes in the research laboratory of E. Balskus. Ethan was a promising young scientist who was on track to develop into a beloved professor. Not only was he brilliant, hard-working, and tenacious but he was also kind, patient, and had a wonderful sense of humor. On Tuesday evening Oct. 18th 2016, Ethan passed away in his sleep. He will be sorry missed by all those who knew him.
