Welcome to my William & Mary Home Page. As Chair of the Department of Government, I have the privilege of leading the 25-member department. We are one of the largest departments on campus, with a strong, encouraging attitude toward our faculty, students and staff.
I began my career at William & Mary in 1974, and have been here since, serving as Chair from 1992-2001 and again since 2008. I hold the rank of full professor, and my teaching and research are in American Politics, especially State and Local Politics, Southern Politics and Political Parties.
My current research is focused on the change in Southern politics and the relationship between increased party competition and policy choices by Southern governments.
