On Campus Resources "Safe Zone seeks to reduce homophobia and hetersexism at the College of William and Mary to make our campus a safer and freer environment for all members of the community, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity." William and Mary Gay and Lesbian Alumni "The William and Mary Gay and Lesbian Alumni organization exists to provide links between William and Mary alumni and the William and Mary community of students, faculty and staff. We provide student support for student activities, through the Lambda Alliance; we provide educational support for gay, lesbian and other gender identity studies, through fund raising and direct participation; and we provide support for alumni through networking, social community and Homecoming events." "The Counseling Center offers a range of free professional services to students wanting help with personal concerns. We work with psychological problems, relationship and family issues, academic and personal stress, and crisis situations. Students are initially seen by an individual counselor. Continuing services, if needed, may be offered in the form of individual, couple, family, or group meetings, depending on what best matches the student's need. We also provide consultation to friends, faculty, and parents concerned about a student in distress." Local and State Resources "Equality Virginia is a statewide, non-partisan lobbying, education and support network for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and straight allied (GLBT) communities in Virginia." GenerationEquality (GE) seeks to ensure that college-age advocates remain a political force relevant to a rapid-moving landscape increasingly positive toward sexual and gender minorities.. A three-prong outreach strategy consisting of political advocacy, education and networking will guide the organization's influence on decision-makers and peers alike. "TransRights Virginia is a group of trans and intersex people and our allies, united in our desire for fairness and equality. We work for full inclusion of trans and intersex people at all levels within society. We also advocate for culturally competent care among all service providers, including (but not limited to): law enforcement agencies and officials; medical professionals; social workers; educators; domestic and sexual violence case workers." "A diverse and inclusive group of volunteers from all walks of life are working to create HROC as the first LGBTQ Community Center in the 32nd largest metropolitan area in the United States and the second largest between Washington, DC and Atlanta, GA. A conservative estimate is that there are over 50,000 LGBTQ people residing in Hampton Roads, Virginia." Gay Community Center of Richmond "The Richmond Gay Community Foundation was founded in September 1999 with the mission of "improving the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people." The organization began operations in 2000 as Diversity Thrift, a thrift store that raised money to support other LGBT nonprofit organizations. In October 2002, the organization added a weekly bingo game to increase its revenues and grant making. Since then, we have distributed more than $450,000 to other organizations." "WAN was founded in response to an increasing need in our community to assist those with the disease and to promote HIV prevention. Our clients have no boundaries of age, gender, race, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, education or socio-economic background. They are from all walks of life." They provide free HIV testing at WAN and periodically do free testing on campus. "Fan Free Clinic (FFC) provides medical treatment, health education and social services to thos in the Richmond Area with limited acces to care. We place special emphasis on welcoming the least served." In addition to providing services around HIV/AIDS, they also provide a Transgender Clinic on Tuesday nights that offers support in transitioning. "ACCESS AIDS Careprovides HIV support services to children and adults who are living
with HIV/AIDS in Hampton Roads. In addition, ACCESS AIDS Care provides
community-wide services such as HIV testing and education to the larger
community." They also provide the Transition Your Life Clinic (TLC) on Friday afternoons for Transgender care.
