Infant Gestalt Reaching

Reaching as Yardstick for Early Infant Gestalt Perception

When presented with a short, wide display, infants tend to reach for its center (A). If two separate objects are presented, infants reach away from the center of the display, toward the middle of one of the two display parts (B). This provides a tool that we can use to assess when infants visually register a display as containing one connected or two separate objects (C). Click here to see a movie of the study procedure.
