Dear SOE Faculty & Staff,

This Spring, William & Mary sent out a call for proposals for faculty interested in exploring integrating rich media projects into their teaching.  I am happy to let you know that of the 12 grants funded across campus, three are School of Education faculty members- Jim Barber, Kimberly Chandler, and Denise Johnson!  You can see the complete list of recipients here.  A collaboration among the Academic Information Services (IT), The Charles Center, and Swem Library will provide the funding and support for these projects.  We look forward to sharing our experiences, lessons learned, and final products with you as we progress through these teaching projects.

Two weeks ago, Anne Charity-Hudley and I took a trip to Swem’s Studio 1 along with her colleagues from the English department, Arthur Knight and Sharon Zuber.  We sat down to chat about the ways in which faculty use images and media in their teaching, as well as some of the classroom obstacles and opportunities that arise from such ease of access to media.  You can read more about our conversation or listen to the recording by visiting the W&M Academic Technology blog.  If you would like to record a conversation in Swem’s Media Center, or, if you would like to chat about ways your students might utilize the resources in the Media Center for class projects and assignments, just let me know.

Technology integration events for the month of April here and around campus appear below.  As always, we value your input.  If there is a strategy, tool, or area you’d like to explore, please let us know.

Please let us know if there is an instructional strategy, resource, or technology that you’d like for us to explore.   On behalf of the Technology Integration Center,

April, Brandon, Gene, Mark, and Sharon,
- your Technology Integration team

Dear SOE Faculty & Staff,

Spring Break is upon us- time to catch up on grading, to plan for new class projects, or perhaps even to relax with a good book!  Let us know if there is a resource, technology, or instructional strategy you’d like to explore over the break.  We’ll be here, and we’re happy to help. As we think about planning for the rest of the semester, please feel free to request a consultation or workshop.

This summer, Judi Harris and Karen Connor (Mason Business School) will teach a 7 week blended eLearning Professional Development course (ePD) for interested faculty.  Please visit the W&M eLearning Blog to read more about this exciting opportunity.  The deadline for faculty applications is Friday, March 16th.  Please feel free to contact Judi if you have questions about this opportunity.

From the new workshop series offered by SWEM and IT, to the W&M eLearning Community, to faculty brown bags and podcasts, faculty members have been so generous in sharing their experiences with teaching and learning with technology.  Nowhere is this truer than in the School of Education.  In February, Judi Harris, Gail Hardinge, and Jake Joseph shared some insights into teaching and collaborating with Adobe Connect.  Last semester, Jim Barber sat down with April at SWEM Media Center to record a podcast about Wiki Writing in Prague.  Later this month, I’ll sit down with Anne Charity-Hudley, as well as Sharon Zuber and Arther Knight from the Arts & Sciences, to discuss how images have impacted teaching, learning, reading, and writing in the English classroom.  Look for that podcast next month!

In short, it is great to work with such a sharing and collaborative faculty.  Please let us know if you have a project or strategy you’d like to share with your colleagues.

W&M eLearning Community Meeting

Friday, February 24th, 1:00-2:30pm, 1013 Miller Hall

W&M faculty and staff are invited to attend the first meeting in the series "Blended learning: Many models, one goal" for the W&M eLearning Community.  The use of blended learning is increasing in higher education, but many instructors are unaware of the wide range of teaching/learning structures that it encompasses, their particular affordances and constraints, and how to select among them. Blended learning can be tailored to meet the needs of the students by considering the nature of the content being taught and the students' learning needs and preferences. It can combine real-time, time-shifted, face-to-face, at-a-distance, individual, small-group, and large-group learning configurations within courses and/or programs. We will begin to map, explore and compare these instructional possibilities. Judi Harris will launch the series at the meeting on February 24th, with an overview of the different types of blended learning used in higher education.  Participants in the series will learn about blended learning in a blended format.  Please visit the W&M eLearning blog at http://elearning.blogs.wm.edu to learn more.

- your Technology Integration team

Dear SOE Faculty & Staff,

The Technology Integration team hopes you're having a fabulous semester!  Many thanks to Dr. Barber, Dr. Eddy, and Dr. Griffin (Community Studies) who shared three innovative ways to use WM Wikis to support teaching, learning, and community during an October brown bag session.  This month, we'll follow up with our introduction to WM Wikis with a WM Wikis Advanced Session (by request).  Adobe Connect users, we've added to our Adobe Connect help pages at the Technology Integration Center page and at the SOE Tech Reference Wiki.

Below you will find a detailed list of our November workshops.  Remember, you can also always request a workshop or a small group or individual consultation.

November Workshops & Events
