Conference Funding

GSA, in partnership with the Office of Graduate Studies and Research (OGSR), is again offering Conference Funding Awards, with modifications for pandemic circumstances.

Award guidelines and eligibility:

With grants of up to $200, this fund is intended to assist A&S graduate students in attending academic conferences, events, or workshops remotely. Grants can cover registration fees or organization membership fees that are required for conference registration. Currently these grants can only be used for remote participation in online conferences. No funds can be granted to cover conference travel expenses until further notice. 

Please also note that conference funds cannot be awarded to graduate students for conferences they will attend after they graduate. Please feel free to contact Sarah Glosson if you are unsure whether this guideline will apply to you or not.

Before applying, we ask that you check with your advisor and/or your Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) to learn whether they have existing grant funding or private funds you may use to cover the costs of conference registration. By doing so, you help us ensure we can assist the most students with our limited resources. 

Dates and how to apply

In 2020-2021, this award will be granted, availability of funds permitting, in four cycles:

Fall Award Cycle: for conferences taking place July 1 - November 30, 2020 (application deadline: November 1, 2020)

Winter Award cycle: for conferences taking place December 1, 2020 - February 28, 2021 (application deadline: January 15, 2021)

Spring Award cycle: for conferences taking place March 1, 2020 - May 31, 2021 (application deadline: April 1, 2021)

Summer Award cycle: for conferences taking place June 1, 2020 - July 31, 2021 (application deadline: June 1, 2021)

Please do not apply ahead; only apply for the current -- nearest upcoming deadline -- award cycle.

Link to the online application form. We recommend you screenshot or print the confirmation webpage you will receive once your application has been submitted. You will not receive a separate email notification that your application has been received.  

Disbursement

Award recipients for the Spring Award Cycle will be notified and funds will be dispursed in mid-late April. Your award will be applied directly to your student account and will be subject to paying off any outstanding charges that exist at the time of disbursement (i.e., tuition, campus housing, parking, health insurance, library fines, graduation fee, etc.). If the account has been paid in full at the time of disbursement of this award, the award will be eligible to be refunded back to the student via direct deposit or check. Please also remember that federal regulation mandates that payments made to a "Non-Resident Alien" be analyzed for tax compliance, meaning it can take up to an additional 30 days for the award to be eligible for a refund. All conference registrations, including virtual, must be approved by the Dean of the Faculty of Arts & Sciences through Chrome River. This step will be taken by the awardee’s graduate administrator once award decisions have been made and awardees have been notified.
