Health Professions Advising at William and Mary

Dr. Beverly Sher

I am a Teaching Professor in the Chemistry Department, as well as a health professions advisor. In addition to my advising responsibilities, I  teach a number of courses, including my long-running writing-intensive COLL 150 course, CHEM 150: Emerging Diseases.

Health Professions Advising:

If you are a William & Mary pre-med student, pre-dental student, pre-pharmacy student, pre-veterinary student, pre-optometry student, or pre-podiatry student, and you would like some guidance, you may email me at btsher@wm.edu to set up an appointment to talk about your plans. I am also happy to assist high school students who are interested in William & Mary, as well as William & Mary alumni. My email address is btsher@wm.edu, and my office is in ISC-3, room 2283.

As of March 2023, William & Mary has two additional premedical advisors. Professor Shantá D. Hinton, a senior faculty member in the Biology Department, and Professor Doug Young, a senior faculty member in the Chemistry Department, have recently taken on this new role, and they are happy to schedule advising appointments by email.  Professor Hinton's email address is sdhinton@wm.edu , and Professor Young's email address is dyoung01@wm.edu .

The Kinesiology Department's Professor Ashleigh Queen advises pre-PA and pre-nursing students; Professor Evie Burnet, also in the Kinesiology Department, advises students interested in PT and OT.

Handouts:

For detailed information on course selection, clinical experience, and other important topics, see the handouts pages of this website.

The Health Careers Advising listserv:

For additional resources, links, and updates on health professions-related activities at William & Mary, students should subscribe to the Health Careers Advising listserv (healthcareersadvising@lists.wm.edu). To join the group, log into lists.wm.edu, click on the Academic line in the list of types of lists, scroll down to the name of the listserv, click it, and then click the Subscribe link on the left side of the page.

Medical school recommendation letters:

William & Mary does not have a pre-health committee, so we do not provide a committee letter for medical school applicants, but I am happy to write an individual premedical advisor's letter for current students or alumni who request one. Professors Young and Hinton can also do this.

Email me if you have questions!
