Laboratory for Cellular & Developmental Genetics

Welcome to the Wawersik Lab home page. Our research is focused on understanding mechanisms of stem cell develoment and sex determination during organ formation. Specifically, we are studying stem cell development and germ cell sex determination during gonad formation using the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster. As stem cell behavior is easily examined and manipulated in developing flies, this work provides a basic understanding of mechanisms controlling organogenesis that are conserved in other organ systems and organisms. Additionally, because the basic process of germ cell development is conserved in flies and higher organsisms, our research has the capacity to provide insight into defects in germline stem cell development and sex determination that lead to infertility and cancer in humans.
